Changing the Email Game with the Gmail Promotions Tab

Gmail Promo Blog

Email. We use it every – single – day. Did you know that between 2014 and 2018 the average office worker received about 90 emails a day? That is a LOT of emails, and a lot of reading and deleting. So how do YOU decide which ones you’ll read, keep, delete, or save? OR what if you overlook one of the best deals that’s come across your email in a while? OR what if your email is one that people instantly delete (even though it’s really good once it’s opened)? We can’t have that happen. And with this new Gmail Promotions Tab update – it won’t! (whew)

| Making Your Email Shine
The Gmail Promotions tab has been completely revamped; in a good way. Out with the old and in with the new, they say .The updated Promotions tab has cut down on text and amped it up with visuals – allowing email marketers more visual opportunities to deliver even more value, and makes it easier and faster for subscribers to see inspiring images and deals.

Now, Gmail will recognize the important messages by user and will separate them by topic or theme, like Best Deals or Top Picks. The current subject line will stay the same but now you will be able to add promo codes, dates, and images – all visible by the user before they even click to open the email!

This new upgrade will put the best email at the top, making it stand out. This allows the marketer to control the exact messaging and appearance of their email.

| The Updates
These new features will allow your emails to get noticed; even with just a glance. You can now have complete control of what your email looks like by the time it reaches the user.

Your emails will have a clean, concise and visual look to them. This new ‘look’ will include:

  • Single Image Preview
    • Add a custom image
      • This gives your users a sneak peak of email’s message
  • Green deal badge
    • Provide detail of what you are offering
      • “50% off”, “BOGO”, “Free Shipping”
  • Grey discount code badge
    • Use this option to show the discount code in the preview
      • This is an optional feature
  • Logo
    • Add your custom brand logo
      • Allow users to associate the email with your brand when they see the logo
  • Expiration Date
    • Use this option to create urgency
      • Tell your users when your email and offer will expire

Note:

These features will only display if you annotate your email with HTML. Annotation happens through a custom bit of JSON code. If that sounds terrifying to you and you aren’t sure how to do that – Gmail and Litmus have teamed up to make this process simple and smooth, providing all the necessary tools to learn the coding basics.
